In every situation, I’ve noticed five principles that—when followed—make the house-hunting process as stress-free as possible. Ignoring one of these tips can cause untold stress and regrets later on. So trust me when I say these principles are important for you to know before you buy a home.

Get your finances in order.

Start by getting a full picture of your credit. Obtain copies of your credit report. Double check to make sure the facts are correct and fix any problems you find. Next, find a suitable lender and get pre-approved for a loan. This will put you in a better position to make a serious offer when you do find the right house and buy a home.

Find a house you can afford.

As with engagement rings, there’s a general rule of thumb when you buy a home. When it comes to engagement rings, some say you should spend about 2 months’ worth of your salary. But for houses, the rule of thumb is that you shouldn’t go over 2 ½ times your annual salary. This will ensure that you don’t buy a home you love only to find out 6 months later that you can hardly keep up with the mortgage.
