5 Gorgeous Outdoor Additions for Your Home

5 Gorgeous Outdoor Additions for Your Home

California has beautiful beaches, mountains, and parks that are perfect for relaxing and having fun. But what if you could enjoy the outdoors just as much in your own backyard?

There are several outdoor features you can add to your property to make your home seem like a vacation getaway. And the best part is, many of them add to the resale value of your home. We call that a win-win!

1. Waterfall or Fountain

Water features like waterfalls, fountains, and koi ponds typically don’t add to the home’s dollar value, according to UpNest, but they do increase the aesthetic appeal and add a touch of luxury.

They also can have a positive impact on your mental well-being, says Psychology Today. Aquatic features have been found to reduce stress and depression as well as improve moods.

Depending on the size and complexity of the project, waterfalls typically cost $933 to $4,686 while the average-sized koi pond will likely cost around $11,000.

2. Inground Pool

Most homeowners underestimate how much an underground pool will cost them because they aren’t aware of how big of a project it is. An average-sized pool typically takes professionals 2 to 3 months to build. And although pools can increase your home’s value as much as 5-8%, this is more often true of custom pools, which can cost you as much as $100,000. The average cost for a swimming pool with few to no customizations, though, is $28,000 to $55,000.

This hefty price tag doesn’t negate the fact that pools are still a great outdoor feature in nearly any neighborhood in San Diego County. After all, our weather allows us to enjoy the outdoors all year round. Those who live in an area with harsher winters, though, should think carefully before adding a pool.

3. Outdoor Fire Pit

A permanent fire pit gives your home a cozy appeal and add to its value. And unlike inground pools, they don’t have to be a big expense, especially if you do the work yourself. The average cost to build a fire pit outside your home is $700.

Just make sure to build the fire pit away from structures, such as your house, garden arches, patio furniture, and so on. And before you start making serious plans, check your city’s regulations to ensure you’re in the clear.

4. Wooden Deck

Wooden decks are one of the few outdoor additions with an average ROI of over 100%. In other words, the money a wooden deck would add to your home’s selling price is more than you would spend to build it.

There are several different materials you can use to build your dream deck. Composite and PVC don’t rot like real wood does, but be careful with these. They can sometimes look more like plastic than wood.

If you go with real wood for your deck, make sure to use treated wood and paint it with waterproof stain.

5. Outdoor Kitchen

You can find a wide range of choices when it comes to outdoor kitchens. If you only need a small space for a BBQ, try getting a movable kitchen for only $300 to $3,000. If you want to build a custom kitchen, though, expect to pay closer to $3,000 to $5,000.

Don’t worry, though. You’ll likely recoup the money you spend on your outdoor cooking space since it will increase your home’s value!

Whichever route you choose, experts recommend adding extra counter space to save you some frustrations during cooking.
